Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art presents an exhibition of photographs created by Peter Lindbergh, Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz and other renowned masters of fashion photography for the legendary Pirelli calendar
- Revolutionary black and white portraits of Peter Lindbergh, one of the greatest fashion photographers of our time, whose vision of beauty has conquered Vogue, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar and Interview
- The best shots from The Cal ™ from 1988 to 2016, reflecting the evolution of the image of women in photography
- A calendar with a half-century history, interpreting contemporary culture and shaping new trends
For the second time, the Erarta Museum will acquaint visitors with photographs created specifically for the Pirelli calendar. Almost immediately after its release in 1964, The Cal ™ won the status of an exclusive product with deep artistic and cultural meaning. An offer of photographers from all over the world to work with Pirelli is synonymous with official recognition, and it is an honor for superstars to take part in the filming of the project.
The Erarta exhibit brings together photos taken by Peter Lindbergh for the 44th edition of the calendar, as well as the best shots from the issues of The Cal ™ from 1988 to 2016, authored by Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Herb Ritz, Patrick Demarchelier, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinood Matadin, Peter Beard, Karl Lagerfeld, Bruce Weber, Clive Arrowsmith, Arthur Elgort, Barry Lategan, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, Nick Knight. Their works allow us to trace the evolution of photography over three decades and clearly demonstrate how the image of a woman has changed over time.
Peter Lindbergh is currently the only photographer to have received a collaboration offer from Pirelli three times. He first worked on the calendar in 1996 in the El Mirage Desert (California), then 6 years later filmed for a new release at Paramount Studios (Los Angeles). In 2014, Lindbergh collaborated with Patrick Demarchelier in the creation of The Cal ™ 50th Anniversary Special Edition.
Developing the concept of the 2017 Pirelli calendar, Peter Lindbergh, who revolutionized the world of the fashion industry and defended the woman’s right to be herself in the lens of his camera, remained true to himself. He called the series of black-and-white portraits "Captured Emotions", thereby emphasizing the intention to show not ideal naked bodies, but feelings and sensations that reveal the soul of the model.
14 world-famous actresses helped Lindbergh to bring the idea of natural beauty and femininity to life: Charlotte Rampling, Nicole Kidman, Helen Mirren, Uma Thurman, Penelope Cruz, Kate Winslet, Julianne Moore, Jessica Chastain, Rooney Mara, Lupita Nyongo, Lea Seydoux, Alicia, Robin Wright and Zhang Ziyi. Another model of the project was Anastasia Ignatova, a lecturer at the Department of Political Theory at MGIMO.
“In an era when women are presented in the media and in general everywhere as examples of transcendental perfection and beauty,” the photographer reveals the idea, “it was important for me to remind everyone that there is another beauty, more real and authentic than the imposed standards. Beauty as an individual, the courage to be yourself and express your emotions. "
