In the main building of the Irkutsk Art Museum. V.P. Sukachev (Lenin St., 5) there is a book and graphic exhibition "1812: Glory and Memory", dedicated to the 210th anniversary of the Patriotic War of 1812.
The exposition includes rare book editions, as well as graphic sheets with portraits of famous military leaders from the museum’s collection.
For the first time, the museum’s library exhibits for free viewing luxurious gift commemorative illustrated editions published in 1912, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the war. The "Military Gallery of 1812" was printed by order of Emperor Nicholas II in one of the best printing houses of its time - "Expeditions for the Procurement of State Papers". The edition, issued in a circulation of only 1600 copies, was not intended for sale. The folio measuring 41 x 35 cm and weighing 8.5 kg includes 329 portraits of the heroes of the Patriotic War. The portraits were painted by specially invited artists Franz Kruger and Georg Dou. The book is a bibliographic rarity.
Another unique edition of 1912 - "For the Faith, the Tsar and the Fatherland: the Patriotic War of 1812 in Pictures" - will introduce you to color lithographed portraits and paintings painted by the best Russian and foreign artists: V.V. Vereshchagin, I.M. Pryanishnikov, A.D. Kivshenko, P. Hess and others.
Portraits of princes P.I. Bagration, M.B. Barclay de Tolly and M.I. Kutuzov, made more than 100 years ago, can be compared with modern autolithographs of the Irkutsk artist, People’s Artist of Russia Alexander Muravyov.
The exhibition "1812: Glory and Memory" will run in the Main Building of the Irkutsk Art Museum (Lenin St., 5) until December 18, 2022. Phone for information: 34-01-46. The exposition is available on the Pushkin map.
