The 13th Apostle is the original title of V.V. Mayakovsky’s poem “A Cloud in Pants,” which was not censored.
At the end of 2023, I took part in a project where artists were tasked with choosing any book from the library and turning it into a work of art.
I got the book “Favorites” by V.V. Mayakovsky, published in 1983. The collection includes works that were familiar to me from school: “Cloud in Pants”, “Listen!”, “Left March”, as well as poems, poems and plays that were new to me.
While working, I studied the poet’s biography in detail and was surprised at how multifaceted he was: actor, poet, artist, advertiser. Such versatility is in many ways inherent in me, I felt a similarity with the poet. The creative method of V.V. Mayakovsky resonates with me, and I find common parallels and intonations with my work.
The first graphic work was a series of linocuts on pages from the collection of Vladimir Mayakovsky. Next, I used the book cover, turning it into an ax object, and made a collage from the illustrations.
Feeling the excitement, I continued to create new works. As a result, instead of just one necessary work for the project, there was a whole series of works that make up the current exhibition.
