NEW YORK. A large collection of etchings by Rembrandt Harmenszoon Van Rijn (1606-1669), owned by the Library and the Morgan Museum (The Morgan Library & Museum) and considered the best in North America, is fully digitized and already available on the Internet. This project is of great importance for scientists, students and other members of the public interested in the work of one of the greatest artists in the world.
Until now, selective specimens from the collection have been periodically exhibited at the museum’s headquarters in New York and have been found in various museum catalogs. Digitization of images will allow you to see the work of the ingenious graphics from anywhere in the world and to study its technique in detail, thanks to the available zoom function. Now almost five hundred images are available on the museum’s website.
The manipulation of Rembrandt’s works is part of a larger strategic initiative aimed at expanding access to the holdings of the Library Museum. In recent years, more than five hundred unique musical manuscripts have been digitized and made publicly available on the Internet, including works by such artists as Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and Handel. As for painting and graphics, an ambitious project to digitize a collection of almost twelve thousand drawings began last fall. The completion of the first stage - processing of 2000 images - should take place in late June.
The collection of the Morgan Library and Museum was based on the works collected by its founder - banker Pripont Morgan, who acquired the first etchings of Rembrandt back in 1900. Now the museum owns most of the three hundred well-known graphic works of the artist, many of which are available in several copies.
Rembrandt’s etchings are famous for their dramatic tension and expressive power of transmitting the psychology of personalities and moment. The artist often repeated the same motives, experimenting with lighting, technology and ways of expressing emotions. Considering etchings, one can trace the growth of skill of a talented graphic artist and the evolution of his artistic and expressive methods.
