El Greco set a record at Sotheby’s Automatic translate
The work of the artist El Greco’s “Prayer of St. Dominic” set a new record for the works of the Spanish master. At Sotheby’s auction in London, the canvas was sold for 9.15 million pounds (14 million dollars, 10.75 million euros). The total cost of the painting, which had never been put up for auction, almost doubled the original estimate of 3-5 million pounds.
According to the representative of the auction house, the auction was quite intense. "Prayer of St. Dominic" is one of four known versions of the painting created by El Greco, probably around 1600. Painted in Toledo, the painting depicts the founder of the Order of the Dominicans, praying in the bosom of nature.
At the same time, another painting by this Renaissance artist was sold at an auction. “Christ on the Cross” was acquired for 3.4 million pounds (5.2 million dollars, 4 million euros). This monumental painting, written between 1600 and 1610, was previously in the collection of the Spanish artist Ignacio Zuloaga.
Both sales were made as part of a traditional summer auction of works by old masters. In total, Sotheby’s auction raised about 35 million pounds (53.1 million dollars, 41.2 million euros). Among the bidders were representatives of 33 countries, including from Asia and the Middle East.
