Detailed reports on more than 1,000 paintings published on the Internet were part of the National Inventory, which aims to digitize a catalog of about 22,000 works of art, in particular 1,900 paintings of continental European origin in public collections in the UK.

The work of Tintoretto (1518-1594) is one of 200 paintings from the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the authorship of which was revised during the study.

"At first glance it is clear that this is a picture of the highest class, but for a long time it remained a mystery to us. The quality of the materials was unusual for such a small work," said the museum curator about the newly opened Tintoretto painting.

"It was cataloged as a work of Andrea Schiavone, a Venetian artist of Croatian descent. Nevertheless, the writing style, a palette with a predominance of white, ocher and carmine, are more typical of Tintoretto’s early works."

The painting was acquired by the Museum in 1865. It depicts Elena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, who is believed to have found a real cross on which Christ was crucified during her journey to the Holy Land.
