An exhibition of El Greco paintings opens in Tokyo Automatic translate
TOKYO. The Tokyo Metropolitan Museum presents an ambitious show of more than fifty works by the Greek artist Domenicos Theotocopoulos (El Greco, 1541-1614), in an attempt to reveal his most universal personal qualities.
Exhibition “El Greco. Visual Poetry ”(“ El Greco. Poesía visual ”) opened its doors today and will work until April 7th. During this time, the Japanese public will be able to get acquainted with the work of the great Cretan artist in the light of new studies of his work.
The exposition will work not only in Japan, but also in many other countries of the world, anticipating the large exhibition, which will be held in Toledo, in 2014, to mark the 400th anniversary of the artist’s death.
The exhibition in Tokyo is divided into four thematic sections exploring the religious motifs in the work of El Greco, his earliest works, paintings that brought him the greatest fame, as well as architectural projects of the artist. According to one of the curators, the exhibition is trying to present the results of all studies of El Greco over the past forty years, which allows you to interpret the artist’s work, which many art critics consider universal in modern conditions.
As part of the exhibition, one can see such paintings as “Brother Ortenso Felix de Paravicino” (“Friar Hortensio Félix de Paravicino”, 1611), “Informant” (“El Soplón”, 1571-72), which displays the artist’s masterful use of chiaroscuro, “The Dream of Philip II” (“El sueño de Felipe II”), which depicts intangible religious objects such as hell, purgatory, heaven. The religious theme is continued in the paintings “The Adoration of the Shepherds” (“La adoración de los pastores”, 1568-1569) or “Christ heals the blind” (“La curación del ciego”, 1571-72). The culmination of the exhibition will be the huge painting “The Immaculate Conception” (“La Inmaculada Concepción”, 1607-1613), the most significant of all presented in Japan.
Pictures for the exhibition are provided by the Prado Museum in Madrid, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
