The shots taken on the IPhone by a stunned museum visitor show a young man walking up to the famous painting and spraying paint on it through a bull’s stencil. Under the bull, until now unknown to the police, “artist” wrote the word “Conquista”, which means “conquest”. So far, no one has been charged with vandalism; the suspect is described as a young man, aged 19-20, with a Hispanic appearance.
According to the agency KPRC News, an eyewitness to the incident managed to ask the criminal about the motives for his act, to which he replied that he thus wanted to honor the work of Picasso. Also, the vandal managed to call himself an American-Mexican artist.
The affected painting was handed over to the restorers of the gallery, who hope to completely restore the masterpiece. “The forecast is good,” said spokeswoman Gretchen Sammons, adding that the museum had never seen such an incident.
When the picture returns to the permanent exhibition of the museum, the organizers do not specify.
