The Instituto Superior de Arte Institute (ISA) in Havana awarded the honorary doctorate Doctor Honoris Causa to the Serbian artist Marina Abramovich.
Marina Abramovich, who is considered one of the most significant representatives of performance art, was born in Belgrade in 1946. Her work has become one of the most prominent at the XI International Biennale in Havana.
Some of her works from the collection of the American foundation Ella Fontanals-Cisneros became the focus of attention at the exhibition “CIFO, Some Views”, which became part of the Biennale. Abramovich’s work is characterized by a desire to explore the limits of severe pain and, accordingly, the capabilities of the human body. For this, elements of rites and gestures are used, and the artist conducted experiments on herself, which sometimes jeopardized her safety.
Abramovich received awards at festivals in Venice, New York and other famous forums. Recently in Madrid the premiere of the controversial “bio-opera” about the artist, “Life and Death of Marina Abramovich” directed by Robert Wilson, with actor Willem Dafoe and singer Anthony.
The artist studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade between 1965 and 1970, then graduated from the graduate school of the Academy of Arts in Zagreb (Croatia) in 1972, and in the seventies her first performance “Plastic Solo” took place. Since 1976, Marina has been living in Amsterdam.
