Researchers from the Center for the Art of the New Time (CAEM) from the University of Lleida (UDL) have discovered a new version of the work of the artist from Valencia Joaquin Sorolla, "Christ." The work is dated 1883, which corresponds to the first years of the artist.

According to the UDL, the peculiarity of this canvas is that the theme was developed during his youth and therefore it has high artistic value.
The CAEM Center experts studied the work for several months, they conducted a number of technical studies using fluorescence, as well as using ultraviolet, infrared and X-rays. All tests showed that the work is original, not fragmentation or an additional layer.
The oil painting has dimensions 97x62 and belongs to a private collector in Madrid - in 2006 it was bought by him at the auction "School of Spanish Art of the 19th Century". The painting is illegibly signed and dated in 1883 on the left side.
This work was described in the directory “The Life and Work of Joaquin Soroll” by Bernardino de Pantorba in 1953 in the section of unknown authors, since the signature could be read as “Donja Clotilde Garcia”. According to experts, the work is of very high quality. It was created during the work of Sorolla as a lighting agent in the photo studio of his father Antonio Garcia.
“This is a bold, free style of writing, and there is no doubt that it is his style,” said CAEM Professor Jimo Company. According to UDL, the discovery is an important step in the further exploration of this little-known stage in the development of this artist.
