SOCHI. The Sochi theater-goers got a unique opportunity to see the play created by masters, whose work is known throughout the theater world. For two evenings, October 24–25, famous Russian artists showed in the Winter Theater a new production of “Twelfth Night” - the directorial work of Declan Donnellan, the set design of which was created by the equally famous artist Nick Ormerod.
For 13 years from the day of the premiere of "Twelfth Night", the performance has traveled to 18 countries, participated in prestigious international festivals. The audience did not remain indifferent to the work of the famous English director who created the play with the participation of Russian artists. Donnellan staged several performances for the Chekhov festival with Russian actors. Among them are “Three Sisters”, “Boris Godunov” and other productions.
In Sochi, this unique performance became part of the international theater festival named after Chekhov, first presented in the city. Irina Romanets, deputy head of Sochi, spoke about the long negotiations that preceded such a significant cultural event. In connection with the Year of Great Britain’s Language and Literature in Russia, the Twelfth Night was shown in Sochi thanks to the support of the British Council.
A feature of the production created by Declan Donnellan was the director’s adherence to the traditions of the Shakespeare Theater, where only men were actors. Participants in the play recall that the performance of female roles was initially not easy for them. The role played by Andrei Kuzichev became especially difficult. The artist was to play a woman pretending to be a man. Participants in the performance note that the minimalism of the scenery helps them to easily exist in this performance.
