Dachshund and a little sad. To the release of Todd Solondz’s new film Automatic translate
MOSCOW. The limited rental of the drama Todd Solondz “Dachshund” has started.
Todd Solondz was not destined to become a rabbi, a lawyer, a musician, realizing her and her parents’ dreams. Advisers in choosing a vocation were Bresson, Truffaut, Tarkovsky, Godard, Bergman. Their films were the main “dish” in the “menu” of film clubs, a weekly visit to which became the main source of his knowledge in this area. And because of his then shyness, it was also a spiritual refuge. This invaluable experience, and not a diploma in English literature, which allowed him to subsequently teach English in courses for immigrants, he considers the main result of training at Yale University. Ahead were his own copyrighted masterpieces - Welcome to the Dollhouse, Happiness, Storytelling and Palindromes
Cinephilus, as well as an intellectual hedonist, was not a boy at the time of adolescence. Nothing but the “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” by Ken Hughes, “The Sound of Music” by Robert Wise and other musical comedies in the house. At 16, he was unable to watch One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest due to his mother’s fears about his age too young for such a sight. 36 he met in the status of one of the most prominent representatives of arthouse cinema, for which there are no forbidden topics, and the stories balance on the verge of a foul. Such a number of deviations, perversions, political incorrectness, poisonous satire, ridicule of traditional American dreams and values, which firmly stitched the fabric of his films, is not close to Woody Allen’s tapes, with which he is relentlessly compared.
Pictures of Solondza are welcome guests at the Sundance Film Festival), BFI London Film Festival, Cannes, Venice, Maryland. With the world premiere at Sundance, the rolling fate of his Wiener-Dog began. Solondz did not shoot the picture for tenderness and collective applause, which is why it is already difficult to suspect. And it is not dedicated to the dog, otherwise, according to the director, it would have turned out another story about Lassie. The dog becomes that prism that allows you to clearly see the people around it, talk about life, God and death. A single tuning fork for four short stories, along which a person’s friend on short legs runs a red thread. Next to the dachshund is a boy struggling with leukemia, the unusually mournful Danny DeVito as the screenwriter and film school teacher David Smertz who is not too kindly in life, whose upturned face leaves no hope for a happy ending, a compassionate nurse (Greta Gerwig), who rescues a dog from euthanasia, an old lady exhausted by oncology performed by Oscar-winning Ellen Burstyn. Wiener-Dog - a reason to laugh heartily, and then feel a sharp injection in the heart. And think about life, God and death.
