MOSCOW. In the chamber of RAMT, the premiere of a new work by director Vladimir Bogatyrev took place. The performance “In the Burning Darkness”, staged by the director based on the play by Antonio Vallejo, a famous Spanish playwright, was presented to the public on February 9th. Work on the play was difficult - rehearsals continued for six months.
The small chamber hall dictated its conditions, because the artists were only a few steps away from the audience. Artists needed to learn how not to look into the faces and eyes of the audience, because their characters are deprived of vision. It was the most difficult to work on the play, because usually artists catch the partner’s eyes, sending him their emotions. In this performance, the artists were expected to have exactly the opposite effect - the specifics of the characters in the play required glances to nowhere.
To learn this, the artists took about a month of rehearsal, and all in all, it took six months to work on the production. The performer of the role of Ignacio (a newcomer to the college for the blind), Alexander Devyatyarov, even several times visited the Center for the rehabilitation of the blind, where he watched the walk and gestures of people with visual problems.
RAMT artists create images of students studying in a college created specifically for blind teenagers by don Pablo. Their leader, who also lacks vision, is convinced that only such a school, where students will feel like full-fledged people, can make them happy.
Indeed, they are happy until a newcomer arrives at school, pushing college old-timers to reflect on the existence of a world that they cannot see. How right Ignacio in his disbelief in the possibility of happiness in this ideal, but closed world, during the performance, each of the audience must decide for themselves.
