Mohsen Makhmalbaf, a director from Iran, this year received one of the awards of the Venice Film Festival. Mokhsen said that he dedicates his award to director Oleg Sentsov, who has recently been convicted of terrorist activities.
The Iranian director calls the accusations against Sentsov a lie and propaganda, believes that instead of many years in prison, he should make new films. After the verdict was passed, many Russian and world cultural figures spoke out in defense of Sentsov. In 2011, the Ukrainian director became famous thanks to his debut film "Gamer", highly praised by the international cinema community.
Mohsen is currently the chairman of the Asian Film Academy. He is known as the author of several high-profile paintings, many of which were banned at different times in his homeland in Iran. In 2001, the Times magazine named his film Kandahar one of the best films of all time.
