MOSCOW. A pleasant surprise for the audience was presented on July 7 and 8 by director Vladimir Pankov, a new version of the well-known play by Edward Albee. In his reading, the production of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” was not a familiar play based on a play staged in many theaters in the world, but turned into a striking musical act in which a variety of theatrical and musical styles were mixed.

Vladimir Pankov was able to perfectly combine the classic musical and Brecht’s zongs, a psychological theater with a hard clowning. Albie in his play created four characters - two married couples. The director added endless doubles to them, helping viewers to understand the emotions of the characters of the performance, sometimes completely contradictory. As a result, seventeen characters appeared on the scene.

Pankov created a multilayer piece of music that was completely unlike the well-known stage versions of the play, which required a well-coordinated ensemble play from the acting team. Each of the participants in the performance - from invited stars Elena Yakovleva and Mikhail Trukhin, to young actors representing SounDrama Studio, not only sing and dance, but also have excellent command of musical instruments.

The musical accompaniment of the performance was written by composer Artyom Kim, the head of the Omnibus ensemble from Tashkent, performing modern music. With its help, prosaic dialogues gained a complex rhythm, turning into zongs, reminiscent of the aesthetics of the Brecht Theater. The creator of the set design was Maxim Obrezkov, who works in the theater. Vakhtangov chief artist.

Formally, the performance is an entreprise, and its premiere took place at the Taganka Actors Theater. Viewers believe that the production deserves a long life.
