MOSCOW. The opening of the eighth International Documentary Film Festival “Artdocfest” was marked by the screening of the premiere of the film “On the Threshold of Fear” by the Latvian documentary Hertz Frank. The authors of the script are Frank himself and his student Maria Kravchenko. After the death of Hertz Frank in 2013, she also co-directed the film and completed work on a documentary.
The film is built as "Frank’s author’s story, interspersed with a unique historical chronicle, reports from the scene and genuine life observations of the most important thing in life - the relationship between a man and a woman." The main action of the picture takes place in Israel in the period from 1995 to the present day. According to a message on the festival’s website, Frank began work on the film more than 10 years ago and only yesterday the first premiere took place.
In addition to premieres, 21 films were included in the competition program of the festival. Competitive and out-of-competition screenings, as well as press conferences, will be held at the main venue of Artdocfest - at the Horizont movie theater. During the event, discussion clubs and presentations of new film ideas in order to search for investors will be opened on the second venue of the festival - in the “Fitil” cinema.
The festival’s jury included theater director Konstantin Bogomolov, film director Alexander Mitta and cartoonist Andrei Bilzho. This year, "Artdocfest" is held for the first time without the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. Due to some disagreements, the Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation Vladimir Medinsky banned the financing of all projects of Vitaly Mansky, who is the president of the festival. This year the project received funds for events thanks to fundraising via the Internet, the organizers raised more than 720 thousand rubles.
The International Documentary Film Festival "Artdocfest" this year for the first time in addition to Moscow, takes place in Riga and St. Petersburg. In Riga, screenings of copyright documentaries were held from December 2 to 9, and in St. Petersburg are held in parallel with the Moscow program. "Artdocfest" will end on December 17 with the closing ceremony and the presentation of the national prize "Laurus" to the winners of the festival.
