ST. PETERSBURG. On February 5, the premiere of the play “Alice” staged by the theater’s artistic director Andrei Moguchy based on the world famous work written by Lewis Carroll took place at the Kamennoostrovsky Theater, which is the New Stage of the Bolshoi Drama Theater.

The performance cannot be called the usual transfer to the stage of a fairy tale, filled with absurd plot lines. Alice’s travels through Wonderland and through the looking glass served only as a pretext for creating a performance where the main character was not a little English girl from Carroll’s fairy tale, but an ordinary woman living near us. Her role was brilliantly performed by the actress beloved by the audience - Alice Freindlich.

Modern Alice, created by Andrei Moguchy in collaboration with Sergey Nosov and Svetlana Shchagina, being in the real world, like many of us, is alone and lost. An unexpected trip from reality to Wonderland made it possible for her to make an attempt to understand something important for herself and thereby change her real life.

In a performance full of unusual theatrical aesthetics, both leading masters of the BDT troupe and the young generation of actors appeared on stage, taking their first steps on the stage of the famous theater. Musical accompaniment for the play was written by Nastasya Khrushcheva, a young, but already very popular composer from St. Petersburg. The production designer is Maria Tregubova, winner of the Golden Mask Prize. She is the chief artist of the Dmitry Krymov Laboratory.

For classic tales Andrei Moguchy addresses for the second time. His first work in this genre was the performance “Happiness”, staged in 2011 at the Alexandrinsky Theater, where the motifs of the famous Blue Bird by Meterlink were used, awarded the Golden Mask Prize.
