MOSCOW. On the Small Stage of the creative association “Gogol Center” on October 5, the premiere of the performance “Medea”, staged by director Vladislav Nastavshev, took place. Director Nastavshev can already be considered a member of the Gogol Center team. Many viewers have already managed to get acquainted with his works, which have successfully entered the repertoire of the theater center - Mitina Lyubov, Fear.

Now Nastavshev presents his reading of a tragic story, which many famous theater directors have addressed at different times. “Medea” appeared before the audience both in the form of a one-man show and as a large-scale costumed production.

In Nastavshev’s performance on the stage there is a minimal number of actors, there are practically no scenery, however, as in every ancient Greek tragedy, the choir sounds. All the events preceding the tragic denouement are retold by two boys playing at the same time the roles of storytellers and sons of Medea, who are to become a weapon of revenge.

Vladislav Nastavshev in his production introduces the audience to Medea as a woman trying to rebel against the traditions accepted in ancient Greece. A woman should have made her husband’s decisions without objection - if he decided to leave his family, for the sake of a profitable union with another woman, then this was his choice. And Medea, instead of a humble attitude to her husband’s choice, finds the most terrible way of revenge - the killing of her children.

The role of Medea became a debut on the stage of the Gogol Center of the Latvian actress Guna Zarini. According to the actress, for her the greatest difficulty in working on the play was that it begins immediately with tragedy - the love between the main characters is already in the past, only hatred and an ever-increasing thirst for revenge remained. The director called the events of the play "the agony of love."
