Eleanor Yakovlevna Halperina is familiar to a wide audience under the pseudonym Nora Gal. Thanks to her tremendous sense of language, which made it possible to choose the best, most appropriate translation option, readers discovered many books written in English and French. “To Kill a Mockingbird”, “The Little Prince”, “American Tragedy”, books by Bradbury, Louis Aragon, Andre Morois, Poe, London, Clark “spoke” in Russian and fell in love thanks to her brilliant translations.
In the year of the centenary of Eleanor Yakovlevna, her daughter Edward Kuzmina and grandson Dmitry founded the award for her memory. It is awarded for the best translation from English of a small prose work written in the XX or XXI century. The 2016 shortlist includes translations of Alexey Kruglov, Elena Kalyavina, Alexey Osipov, Anna Blaise, Tatyana Borovikova, Maria Sedova, Maria Galina, Leonid Motylev. The jury is to evaluate their interpretations of Woodhouse, Gaiman, Miller, Macarlane, Hughes, O’Connor, Nobel laureate Alice Munroe.
About which of the translations will be preferred, it will become known at the end of April.
