NEW YORK. Pulitzer Prize for debut novel about double agent throwing.
Debut novels appear in award lists of various literary prizes more and more often. It is enough to recall the results of the current NOS, Yasnaya Polyana and the Big Book, on which the first steps in the great literature of Guzel Yakhina and Danila Zaitsev were “shot”. The Pulitzer Prize for Literature was awarded this year for Viet Thanh Nguyen’s debut novel The Sympathizer, which refers to the realities of the Vietnam War. The confusion of its final stage is about to end with the exodus of American troops. Among the refugees who did not want to remain in the communist Saigon was the family of Nguyen himself. His parents managed to move to America in 1975, when the future writer was 4 years old. With a less favorable development of events, they could well end up in one of the so-called re-education camps. Not expecting the “golden mountains” in the country of their home, the writer’s parents traveled a lot around the country in search of a better life. Settled in California, withstood, managed to educate his son. Now Nguyen is a Bachelor of Arts degree, lecturer at the University of Southern California, writer, journalist whose critical cultural reviews regularly appear in The Los Angeles Times.
The protagonist of "Sympathy" is a double agent. The captain of the South Vietnamese army, included in the list of lucky ones who will succeed in breaking out of the coming communist paradise, regularly supplies strategic information to the opposite side. Compassion for communist ideals pushes him to betray close people. The bifurcation that accompanies the hero from birth - from the French pope and the Vietnamese mother, will determine his throwing throughout the tragic history.
One of the prize winners in the photojournalism section was Russian Sergei Ponomarev for his photo stories on the hottest topic of today - the influx of migrants into Europe.
