BERLIN. The famous Israeli writer Amos Oz received the prestigious award of the German International Literary Prize for his novel “Judah”. In the work, the author considers the topic of betrayal and explores the key tragedies that have occurred with the Israeli people - from the founding of the Jewish state and the Holocaust, to the years of military conflict with the Palestinians.
The award ceremony will be held on July 8 in Berlin, where the writer will be awarded a cash prize of 25 thousand euros. Also, a reward and a cash prize of 10 thousand euros will be received by translator Miriam Pressler for translating Amos Oz’s novel into German. It is worth noting that in the spring of this year, Presler also received the Leipzig Book Fair award for her work on the book “Judas”.
The jury of the German International Literature Prize noted that Amos Oz in his work “masterfully conveyed the main problems and conflicts in the Middle East”, and also emphasized the “subtle nuances of a talented translation” by Miriam Presler. The award, established by the House of World Cultures and the Elementarteilchen Foundation in Hamburg, has existed for seven years, and its laureates make a significant contribution to the development of the world literary heritage.
Note that in modern literature, Amos Oz has already managed to gain world fame. Six years ago, the novelist was prophesied to receive the Nobel Prize in literature. His work “My Michael”, published in 1968, was included in the top 100 best books of the twentieth century. The works of the Israeli writer have been translated into 36 languages and published in more than thirty countries around the world.
