The painting, bought 100 years ago for $ 25, may turn out to be a Raphael script automatic translate
ABERDINSHIRE. While working on another episode of the transfer of the Air Force’s «Britain’s Lost Masterpieces» to the National Trust for Scotland’s Haddo House in Aberdeenshire, art historian Bendor Grosvenor and his team of experts found a picture, which can belong to the brush Raphael (Raphael). Bought for $ 25 at the end of the XIX century, today its price can grow 26 million US dollars.
In 1899 the picture «Virgin Mary» (Virgin Mary) was considered a good copy, its price was 25 dollars (2574 dollars in modern prices). The fact that the copy could be the original was first mentioned by Bendor Grosvenor, an art critic and TV presenter, who made more than one such find. Grosvenor and his team inspected the Haddo House collection when they discovered in the corner above the door a canvas dating from 1505-1510 and attributed to the Italian artist Innocenzo da Imola (1485-1548). Grosvenor became interested in the painting and asked permission to show it to professional restorers. After part of the painting was cleared of the old, tarnished varnish, its incredible resemblance to other works of Raphael became noticeable.
«The search for new works Raphael captures,» - said Grosvenor. - «This is a beautiful picture, which is worthy to be seen by as many people as possible!»
George Hamilton-Gordon, former British Prime Minister and 4th Earl of Aberdeen, was sure that the painting could be written by Rafael, who acquired it at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1841, the canvas was even exhibited in London, along with other works of the great artist. But the experts of that time recognized him as a copy made by the follower of Raphael, most probably by the little-known artificer Innocenz and Imola.
Grosvenor managed to convince everyone of the need to further study the picture, and luck seems to have smiled at him: important evidence of authenticity has already been found. The figure of the face of the model is made in the style of Raphael, moreover, this same profile is depicted in another picture of the master, as well as on a sketch now lost and preserved only in photographs.
More thorough research and consultations with European experts on the work of Raphael is still to come, but Grosvenor is convinced that he is going in the right direction. The current Earl of Aberdeen noted that if the authenticity of the picture had been established a hundred years ago, it would, with a high probability, have already been sold. Thus, it is possible that fate itself retained for Scotland the only Raphael in the state collection of works of art.
