The State Historical Museum was the first in Russia to display tactile models for key historical monuments on display.
In 2019, the Historical Museum hosted an exhibition "A touching story", which presented tactile models of key exhibits of the museum - unique archaeological finds, iconic monuments of Ancient Russia and the Moscow Kingdom. The project was implemented with the assistance of the So-Unity Charitable Foundation for the Support of the Deaf-Blind, the ArcheoLab Research and Restoration Laboratory and the AURATech National Association of Assistive Technologies Market Participants. The exhibition received a great response and interested museum visitors. In May 2020, the project won in the nomination "Working with Special Audiences" of the inter-museum competition of the "Intermuseum-2020" festival.
The project continued its further development. The ArcheoLab research laboratory, which produced tactile models for the Touching Story exhibition, won the Presidential Grants Fund competition. Within the framework of the grant, more than 30 tactile models of key monuments of the first floor of the exposition of the Historical Museum were created. Thanks to this project, people with disabilities will touch upon previously inaccessible knowledge, visit the Historical Museum, both individually and with guides, who will use tactile models to conduct thematic or sightseeing tours. In addition, the arrangement of tactile models and the appearance of the stands do not violate the uniform decoration of the museum halls.
Tactile models will be placed on special stands with built-in audio-audio guide for blind and visually impaired visitors. The desks will be accessible to wheelchair users. All explications to tactile models have been translated into Russian sign language for deaf and hard of hearing visitors.
The Historical Museum will be the first museum institution to place tactile models on a permanent basis without separating them into a separate space.
