MOSCOW. The opening of the exhibition of works by Nikolai Afanasevich Ponomarev marked the 100th anniversary of the People’s Artist, the famous Russian graphic artist of his colleague. The presentation of the exhibition, located in the halls of the Russian Academy of Arts on Prechistenka, took place on July 26. The exposition includes more than 90 works provided for the exhibition by the artist’s family. Many works are shown to viewers for the first time.
Visitors to the exhibition will get acquainted with the sheets included in the famous graphic series, works made by Nikolai Ponomarev during trips to Russia and other countries. In addition to graphics, at the exhibition you can see the artist’s work, made in oil painting technique.
Nikolai Afanasevich belongs to the generation of artists who began their journey in art in the first post-war years. He graduated from the Institute. Surikov in 1946, and then entered graduate school of the same university. Subsequently, he worked as a teacher of graphic art at his native institute. Since 1947, the future academician of the Russian Academy of Arts began to show his works at art exhibitions.
The artist devoted his first graphic series to the miners of Donbass, to people near whom he spent his childhood. These works participated in the All-Union Art Exhibition, held in 1947. One of these series, presented by the artist under the name "Donbass Miners", was awarded the State Prize.
Nikolai Ponomarev possessed not only a creative personality that made him a significant figure in Russian art life, but also the talent of the organizer. This unique gift allowed for 20 years to lead the Union of Artists of the USSR, and then the Russian Academy of Arts.
