Polenov’s canvas returned to Russia thanks to the work of the German-Russian Dialogue group. Its participants are studying the origin of works of art that have been in Germany since World War II. According to information received, this painting was taken out of the Taganrog Museum in 1943.

Her whereabouts remained unknown until the appearance of the painting in 1959 in a private collection. In 1986, the museum of the German city of Kiel bought this painting from a collector, paying 40 thousand German marks for it. At the end of September 2017, a public ceremony of transferring the canvas “Pond with Sails” to the Taganrog Museum-Reserve was held at the Kiel Museum.

The presentation of the exhibition was attended by Arkady Dvorkovich, a representative of the Russian government and Vasily Golubev, governor of the Rostov region. According to the governor, the return of this picture was the "happy ending of a sad story."
