The guests and participants of the exhibition were welcomed by: President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli, project leader and author - vice president of the Russian Academy of Arts, chairman of the Volga branch of the Russian Academy of Arts, president of the TSHR Konstantin Khudyakov, chairman of the Board of Directors of the European Center for Fine Arts, professor Igor Bondarenko, deputy plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bashkortostan under the President Russian Federation Oleg Matytsin, chairman of the board of the Moscow Union of Artists and the Association of Artists of the Ministry of Agriculture Viktor Glukhov, chairman of the Moscow branch Russian artists oyuza Nikolai Borovsky. The main organizers of the project: the Russian Academy of Arts, the Volga branch of the Russian Academy of Arts and the Creative Union of Artists of Russia with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Russia, the Ministry of Culture of the Saratov Region, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Bashkortostan, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Collection of Actual Realism Foundation and the Zurab Tsereteli Foundation.
The large-scale research project is based on the methodology of the 17th century European enlightener Jan Amos Komensky, who created the encyclopedic work for the youth “The World of Sensual Things in Pictures”. The task of the organizers of the project is to reflect the diversity of the surrounding world of nature and human relations through the works of artists of the beginning of the 21st century, to explore the modern art process. In 2016, in the framework of the academic competition, works on 10 topics were considered: Paradise, Fire, Air, Water, Earth, Day and Night, Time, Seasons, Cataclysm, Space.
The Expert Council of the Russian Academy of Arts and the jury, which included well-known figures of culture and art, selected more than 500 works (about 460 authors) in this project. As a result, the laureates of the competition (31 people) were identified: 6 laureates of the K. S. Petrov-Vodkin Prizes (Antonova Yana, Gavryushov Mikhail, Chudin Victor, Scherbakov Andrey from Saratov, Kalinin Sergey and Semenov Evgeny from Moscow), 6 laureates of the I Prizes E. Repina (Borisov Sergey and Zhernoklyuev Alexander from Moscow, Zuev Alexey and Knyazev Yakov from Tolyatti, Nuzhdov Anatoly from Ulyanovsk, Nurgaliev Ruslan from Saratov), 8 prize winners named after N. I. Feshin (Antonova Irina, Zagidullin Ravil, Alexander Lopatkin, Magina Love from Kazan, Gryaznov Victor from Nizhny Novgorod Oroda, Pusenkov Georgy and Tabenkin Lev from Moscow), 5 laureates of the M.V. Nesterov Prize (Arslanov Rifkhat, Pegov Victor, Hannanov Vasil from Ufa, Batynkov Konstantin from Moscow, Shapran Andrey from Novosibirsk), 6 laureates of the Prizes of the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Z. K. Tsereteli (Munirova Aigul from Naberezhnye Chelny, Tikhanovskaya Rada from Nizhny Novgorod, Volkonskaya Julia, Vera Lagutenkova, Galina Poloz from Moscow, Alena Shapovalova from Vladikavkaz).
The awards of the academic competition “Against the Current” were initiated by the Volga branch of the Russian Academy of Arts and the “Collection of Actual Realism” Foundation. The Konstantin S. Petrov-Vodkin Prizes were funded by the Government of the Saratov Region, the N. I. Feshin Prize - the Government of Tatarstan, the M. V. Nesterov Prize - the Government of Bashkortostan, the I. E. Repin Prize - “The Collection of Actual Realism” Foundation, the Prize of the President of the Russian Academy of Arts - Zurab Tsereteli Foundation.
Within the framework of the academic project were organized: a traveling exhibition, master classes in painting, digital art, round tables, seminars, presentations of publishing projects. Route and schedule of the traveling exhibition: Saratov (September 7-25) - Tolyatti (October 5-12) - Ufa (October 19-26) - Kazan (October 27 - November 17) - Moscow, Z. Tsereteli Art Gallery of the Russian Academy of Arts (November 29 - 12 December).
The exposition of the traveling exhibition included the works of artists from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Saratov, Samara, Togliatti, Izhevsk, Perm, Penza, Cheboksary, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Ulyanovsk, Ufa, Novosibirsk. A total of about 200 works by more than 180 artists. The Tsereteli Art Gallery of the Russian Academy of Arts presents 50 percent of the works of the traveling exhibition. The authors of the works are representatives of the TSH of Russia, the Moscow Union of Artists and the Union of Artists of Russia, regional branches of the TSHR, SXR, trainees at the Creative Workshops of the Russian Academy of Arts, free artists.
In Moscow, the presentation of the 2nd volume of the anti-current art encyclopedia took place with research articles by art critics and the works of participants (776 pp. Ill.) Each artist participating in an academic project can purchase an original copy of the album.
This year, a special place in the art encyclopedia is given to the works of N. I. Feshin from the collection of the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan (Kazan). Feshin’s works open every thematic section of the encyclopedia.
As promised, the next “tens” of “Against the Current” topics for 2018 were held. President of the Russian Academy of Arts Z. K. Tsereteli voiced the 5th block of topics on Comenius: Object, Country and Law, Architecture, Faith, Fashion, Housewares, Decorations, Food, Waste, Self-portrait. From today, artists can begin to execute a creative order. Competitive selection of works for the next academic project will be announced in January-February 2018.
On November 30, a round table was held in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts on the results of the research exhibition project Red Gate / Against the Current, in which curators, members of the Expert Council of the Russian Academy of Arts, and project participants took part. Moderators: K.V. Khudyakov and I.P. Sosnovskaya. At the final round table discussion of the results and development prospects of the project was held, as well as the topics of the round tables held as part of the traveling exhibition in Saratov, Togliatti and Kazan, namely: “The Art Process and the Economic Crisis”: individual and group strategies, interaction with institutions and experiences of self-organization; legislative support of contemporary art at the federal and regional levels; “Quality in contemporary and traditional art”: expert assessment and selection criteria, problems of exposure and perception of works of different styles, genres and directions. A number of valuable suggestions were made, which will be taken into account in the next stages of the long-term project.
At the initiative of the President of the European Foundation for Slavic Literature and Culture and the European Academy of Security and Conflictology, Professor I. I. Bondarenko, supported by the Volga branch of the Russian Academy of Arts and Technical Customs, the exhibition “Red Gate / Against the Flow” is planned to be shown in March 2017 in the European Gallery in Bratislava Center of Fine Arts. In parallel, it is planned to hold an international scientific conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the February Revolution of 1917.
