BARNAUL. This year the Art Museum of the Altai Territory opens a cycle of exhibitions dedicated to artists whose anniversaries are celebrated this year, and their works are in the museum’s collections. The first exhibition of the future series of expositions, which are being prepared for display to museum visitors, was the exposition of works by Pavel Basmanov, which opened on January 13. This year marks the 110th anniversary of the master, whom the organizers of the exhibition called "The Artist of the Russian World."
The name of Pavel Basmanov is well known and respected to art critics and art lovers. However, for the majority of museum visitors, this exhibition will be the discovery of the talent of their countryman, whose childhood was spent in the Altai Territory. Pavel Basmanov in his childhood lived in the village of Batalovo. In those years, it belonged to the Barnaul district of the Tomsk province. Today this village belongs to Shipunovsky district of Altai Territory.
After graduating from the classical gymnasium, Pavel Basmanov chooses the profession of an artist, studying it first in Altai, and then leaves for Petrograd, where he enters the Artistic Industrial College, specializing in graphics. In the thirties, the artist was attracted to painting. In this form of art, his teacher was the artist Vladimir Sterligov, one of the students of K. Malevich.
Pavel Basmanov was well acquainted with many famous artists of those years, highly appreciating his work. Although the artist’s work is not very familiar to the general public, today his works are stored in many reputable museums in Russia. The artist’s legacy has many rustic watercolors.
At the exhibition, available until February 17, watercolors belonging to the graphic series “Old Siberia” and “Walks”, the most famous among the works of Pavel Basmanov, are presented to the audience.
