ST. PETERSBURG. On September 22, an exhibition was opened in the Russian Museum in the exhibition space of Mikhailovsky Castle, offering visitors an acquaintance with the work of Andrei Martynov, who created his works in the early 19th century.

The artist was not only the creator of the paintings, he was very skilled in engraving and lithography, painted watercolors, but he paid most attention to painting landscapes. The exposition, created with the help of the country’s most prominent museums and private collections, has collected more than a hundred works performed by Andrei Efimovich in various artistic techniques.

Works for the exhibition were selected so that visitors to the museum got acquainted with the main stages of the artist’s career. After studying at the Imperial Academy, where Martynov studied with Semen Shchedrin, landscape painting, he got the opportunity to further study in Italy, from where he brought Italian landscapes provided to the Academy as a report. The work was appreciated, but the artist did not continue his academic career.

A huge impact on the work of Andrei Martynov had his trip to China as an artist in a diplomatic mission. The artist went on this journey in 1805. Martynov received many vivid impressions from the trip, brought a large number of full-scale sketches, which later served to create new works.

After returning from the trip, the artist performed many artistic works using various techniques. At the opening exhibition, viewers will be able to get acquainted with one of the graphic albums “Mongolian types” created at that time, consisting of watercolors and 72 drawings made with ink and gouache. Until recently, the album was considered lost.
