Project concept:
“The completed dissertation” is a fundamental photographic work that was created by the Kharkov group “Shilo” for several years. Pursuing a study of the Kharkov School of Photography, the authors turn to its origins - Boris Mikhailov and his "Unfinished dissertation." By processing and updating it directly on top of the printed original, Shilo, as it were, declares the emergence of a new wave of Kharkov photographers. A “completed dissertation” is an intergenerational game. Ironic, on the one hand, serious and uncompromising, on the other. The photographs of the “grandfather” are closed and erased, “his texts have lost their meaning and serve only as an ornament”, this is “a game of arrogance”, “coming to the forefront of a new aesthetic”, but on the foundation of the traditions of the founders. In addition to the idea of continuity and renewal, the project “Completed dissertation” of the “young” School is a kind of challenge to the time, the struggle for survival. Unable to resist in the 90s, will the Kharkov School of Photography today be able to withstand the onslaught of time, taking into account the current unpredictable rapidly developing events in Ukraine? What is the fate of the school? Keeping relevance, these questions fill the project with new meanings.
