S. Fateev: The paintings at the exhibition Domes of Moscow are not at all commercial. Among Muscovites there are hardly any people who want to hang a picture of the temple in their apartment, and for tourists it is too large for souvenirs, and for the collector - drawing on paper is less valuable than oil painting on canvas. This exhibition is for the audience. For those who want to see the beauty of our city in thin lines and watercolor fills. Many of the species represented in the paintings simply do not exist: other temples are completely hidden in the backyards or the sun never falls on their domes.
D. Surzhina: I found these species for you and for myself, cleaned them from the scaling of the fences, added the destroyed parts. Who knows if these temples will be rebuilt in the future or completely demolished… In the meantime, there are some, let’s admire them. The cost of reproductions is quite affordable, and the quality with modern technologies for transferring images to canvas or paper almost matches the original.
S. Fateev: When implementing his plans, a creative person often stumbles upon the same problems as ordinary sellers, but at the same time he experiences strange remorse: he sells something that he enjoyed. If he sold other people’s things, he would surely demand the corresponding price for them without any complexes. And when he puts up a picture for sale and customers like his work, the artist can give it almost for nothing. Why is this happening?
Diana Surzhina: Having gone out in the hungry years of Perestroika to Arbat, I sold paintings, received money and knew that I needed to buy food for them and somehow hold out until the autumn when the potatoes ripen on the site and I can rest. I was proud of my role as a getter, my parents saw me as a support. But even then it was not easy for me to name the price for the painting and give it to unknown hands. One boogie in a classic raspberry-colored jacket once asked me: “And if I buy from you and here, will I immediately trample your pictures?” Will you give? And for two prices? And how much will you give? “I won’t give it back,” I replied, and began to get home… Day three was frankly bad for me, I was afraid to go out and regretted that I hadn’t… And then it passed. In these pictures was not only my work, I wouldn’t regret mine… But everyone helped me: one cut white frames, the other outlined my drawings for ink for brightness, the third went and photographed churches. And the plot itself: the churches of Moscow - did not allow it to be treated like that. When I nevertheless came out again, the Raspberry Bull told my boys not to touch me and not to take money from me.
S. Fateev: The psychological type of artist is an introvert, a person working alone. But in order to exhibit and sell their work you need a completely opposite type - light, open, sociable.
Diana Surzhina: We must accept as the truth that the tension in sales and exhibitions for the introvert is normal. The extrovert can happily bargain and argue, and the introvert will be upset by the very process of selling and parting with the picture. Your feelings can even be transmitted to customers and push them away from acquiring a picture. But if you imagine with them a place where the picture will hang…
“Where do you want to hang her?” What color is the wallpaper in the room? - Yes, we are a gift to the boss… - Does he like painting? Create an atmosphere where it is “profitable for everyone” - they will buy a worthy thing, and you will know that they will accept it with pleasure, and it will become easier to sell.
S. Fateev: Pictures from the exhibition “Domes of Moscow” are intended for the flow of viewers, they would look good on the walls of large real estate agencies, in construction companies, banks. The beauty of the architectural forms of real estate, the monumentality of buildings and the lightness of watercolors evoke a sense of pride and involvement in the culture of the capital of our country.
