ST. PETERSBURG. On April 25, an exhibition of paintings by the artist Valentin Levitin was opened in the exhibition hall of the Dostoevsky Museum. The work of the St. Petersburg master occupies a worthy place in the artistic life of the Northern capital.
Among professional artists, Levitin has a well-deserved authority, art historians say about his work that his work has a connection with the heritage of such famous masters as M. Schwartzman and V. Sterlingov. However, for all their kinship, the picturesque system of Valentin Levitin exists on its own.
The exhibition consists of twenty paintings by the artist, most of which were created in recent years. The exhibition also includes earlier works by Levitin, shown to the public for the first time.
Since Valentin Levitin is an architect by profession, in his work he initially turned to graphics. Among his works, performed before 1975, there are etchings, linocuts, monotypes. Basically, his works were still lifes and urban architectural landscapes.
Later in his work appeared paintings and mosaics, however, in the works often sound motifs, familiar from the artist’s early graphics. In the works created by Valentin Levitin, philosophical reflections are constantly present. The main factor in assessing his work, the artist considers their ability to attract the attention of viewers, reflect on its content.
From the first years of his work, Levitin was looking for his own way in art, constantly experimenting with genres and techniques, actively participated in exhibition projects, and in 1975 joined the Union of Artists of the USSR. The master’s works are in major museums and are popular with famous collectors.
