Unique engravings about Russian life in the exhibition hall "On Pokrovskaya" Automatic translate
Ulyanovsk. The exhibition hall “On Pokrovskaya” invites you to visit the new exhibition “Russian Holidays”, which opened on October 24, where everyone can get acquainted with a collection of prints and lithographs from the collections of the museum “The Homeland of V. I. Lenin”.
The exhibition will allow visitors to get acquainted with the customs and rituals, accompanying festive celebrations at Epiphany and Christmas, with folk traditions associated with these holidays. The basis of the unique exposition is 27 prints made by the famous English painter and engraver John Atkinson.
Beginning in 1799, the artist lived in St. Petersburg for about three years, where he wrote many drawings on various topics. Returning to London in 1802, Atkinson completed engravings from his best works, and then, in just two years, he published three volumes of copyright works dedicated to Emperor Alexander I.
Atkinson’s album of engravings, "Picturesque Views of Life…" became widely known. Due to the extreme accuracy of the details of everyday life conveyed by the artist, the album is still useful to researchers of Russian culture. Explanatory inscriptions for engravings were made by the court engraver of Catherine II, J. Worker, the former adoptive father of Atkinson.
The exposition is supplemented with engravings made by the famous Russian travel artist E. M. Korneev. Engravings presented at the exhibition are part of the famous series “Peoples of Russia…”.
This series was made at the beginning of the 19th century, when, after graduating from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, the young artist was a member of the expedition to Siberia, the Caucasus and the Volga region, led by General Sprengporten.
The exhibition, open until November 30, also houses an old festive Russian costume from the collection of the museum-reserve.
