The city exhibition hall of the capital of Karelia invites connoisseurs of pictorial art to visit the exhibition that opened on August 2, which presents the work of the plein air that took place in 2011 as part of a project organized during the year of Russia in Italy and, accordingly, the year of Italy in Russia.

Thanks to the participation in the project, twelve artists working in the pastel technique got the opportunity to get together in the Italian province of Cuneo. The province is located at the foot of the Alpine Range, where the landscapes are exceptionally beautiful at any time of the year. With the approach of autumn, nature paints them in such shades that artists, like birds, flock from all sides in search of the most beautiful places to capture them in their paintings.

The works of artists, whose skill is shown at the exhibition, are united not only by joint work in the Italian open air. It is also a common technique in which the work of masters of pictorial art is performed. All of them use a very rare dry pastel technique these days.

After showing the results of the Italian plein air, many artists showed interest in this painting technique, especially attractive in that it is convenient to work quickly with its help, and you can mix colors directly on the basis of the drawing. In addition, pastels correctly fixed and placed under glass can be stored for several centuries without changing color.

Art historians believe that artists began to actively use pastel in their works at the end of the Renaissance, and this technique reached its greatest popularity in the mid-18th century, and later it became less and less applied.
