SARATOV. In the museum to them. Radishchev continues to carry out the project "Exhibition of one painting." A new painting that museum visitors can see from July 8 to August 5 as part of this project is a painting previously considered to be owned by another artist, a painting by landscape painter Marco Ricci from Venice, “Landscape with a scene from the sermon of John the Baptist.”
Previously, Salvator Rosa (1615-1673), a Neapolitan artist who painted landscapes that seemed strange to his contemporaries, was considered the author of this picture. On his canvases in front of the audience were gloomy areas inhabited by wandering philosophers, hermits or robbers. This style of writing began to be used by many imitators, so art historians began to consider the name of the artist collective. His works included paintings by other artists who wrote in the same manner.
The same story happened with the canvas of Marco Ricci, presented at an exhibition in Saratov. Only modern research methods could help art historians establish the true author of the picture. The fact is that, in search of a new style of his painting, Marco Ricci became interested in the landscapes of Salvator Rosa, but his works did not become copies of his predecessor (Marco Ricci lived a century later), but the development of the possibilities of a romantic landscape, making it more picturesque.
In the picture, which the opportunity to see the Saratovites, wild pristine nature. Gigantic trees broken by storms, darkness through which flashes of light break through - a romantic atmosphere, far from classical peace. After some time, the painting of Marco Ricci became calmer, light colors appeared in it, however, for the history of art it is precisely the artist’s early paintings, one of which is presented in the museum.
