KOSTROMA. An exhibition of Nikolai Vasilievich Shuvalov, an artist whose work has made a huge contribution to the cultural life of Kostroma, was solemnly opened in the city art gallery on March 21. His work is familiar to all citizens interested in art.

Nikolai Shuvalov passed away too soon, but managed to leave a rich creative heritage, which amounted to more than a thousand works of graphics and painting. His fate as an artist was not easy. For the first time, Shuvalov presented his works to the public in 1958.

The paintings were placed within the walls of the regional drama theater, but the exhibition lasted for just a few days, and then, by order of the secretary of the regional committee, the paintings were removed from the walls of the lobby and were heaped up in the middle of the workshop room in the art school.

After the exhibition, which was held in 1970 in the art department of the regional library, its organizer, R. A. Apatova, was punished for its creation. It was impossible not to notice a talented person at all, but to not recognize his dignity, to keep silent about his successes was a common thing. For ten years, Shuvalov was not admitted to the Union of Artists, he survived more than one public condemnation of his work, which received the stigma - "anti-people art."

However, the artist stubbornly continued to go his own way in painting. If Shuvalov’s drawings are characterized by rigor and academicity, then in painting he was constantly in search of color and form. In his paintings there are various styles and mixed various techniques.

At the exhibition, open until April 14, you can see only 26 works by Shuvalov, presented from her collection by Tatyana Miroshnikova. But even such a small number of works gives an idea of ​​the original talent of the artist.
