The painting depicts a vast, sun-drenched wheat field in the foreground, rendered with energetic, impasto brushstrokes of yellow and ochre that give a sense of movement and texture. The wheat stalks sway as if in a gentle breeze. In the middle ground, a flat landscape stretches out, populated by a cluster of buildings that appear to be a village or small town, complete with a church steeple. Extending from the left side of the town are industrial elements: smokestacks emitting dark plumes of smoke and a red windmill, suggesting the presence of industry encroaching on the rural landscape.
The background is dominated by a bright, almost overpowering yellow sun, low on the horizon, casting a warm glow across the scene and tinging the sky with hints of orange and yellow, despite the dominant deep blue. The overall impression is one of a summer evening, with the intense heat of the day giving way to the cooling dusk. Two small figures are visible in the wheat field, adding a sense of scale and human presence within the expansive landscape.
