Description of Vasily Vereshchagin’s painting Deadly Wounded
Vasily Vereshchagin is a well-known Russian artist whose talented genius was revealed in the second half of the 19th century after painting a series of paintings dedicated to his journey as an assistant to the Turkestan governor through Central Asia.
The world political situation at that time left much to be desired, there were endless wars both with Ottoman Turkey and in the vastness of Turkestan, blood was shed, innocent soldiers were sent to their certain deaths by the hundreds. Seeing the horror of the situation, the artist decides to write several paintings that would call people to peace, one of the planned paintings is "The mortally wounded. Strangely enough, we know the exact date of the painting - 1783, as well as the feelings that prompted the artist to take up the brush.
At the top of the canvas, near the frame itself Vereshchagin wrote the following - "Killed my brothers ... killed!", these words passed the cry of the soul, the main character of the picture - running from the field of battle wounded soldier. The man in the picture is in despair, which can not be seen in his distorted horror of his face and the agonizing effort with which he closes both hands gaping in the chest wound near the heart.
The soldier’s rifle is left behind, he does not pay attention to it, his life hangs in the balance and that is all that matters. His comrades lie dead, their blood has already stained the hot sand, soon the turn will come for this man too, trying hard to save his only asset - life.
The backdrop of the painting is obscured by gunpowder smoke, through which the viewer can see the ongoing siege of the fortress, but for this desperate fleeing man everything is already over, he will no longer fight, and very soon will not live. This is the main idea of this painting: to show the horror of impending death and to arouse in the viewer, above all in high places, the desire for an end to all wars and conflicts.

“Надо, чтобы человек непреходящую, невероятную красоту мира чувствовал ежечасно, ежеминутно,- писал А. А. Пластов. – И когда поймет он эту удивительность, громоподобность бытия – на все его хватит: и на подвиг в работе, и на защиту Отечества, и на любовь к детям, к человечеству всему. Вот для этого и существует живопись”.

The picture has something of this: people, wear, man, weapon, lid, helmet, veil, war, uniform, military, skirmish, lithograph, outfit, sword.
Perhaps it’s a painting of a man on skis with another man laying on the ground behind him and another man.
