Description of Vasily Surikov’s painting The Taking of the Snow City
The soul of the Russian people always craves festivals and noisy celebrations. And we are used to celebrating major holidays like Maslenitsa on a grand scale.
In the homeland of Vasily Ivanovich Surikov, there is an unusual pastime. One erected snow fortresses from the snow, and on the last day of Maslenitsa there was a funny assault. To watch the capture of the city of snow has always gathered many wishing.
Surikov dedicated his work "The Conquest of the Snow City" to this unusual event.
The picture was painted in 1891. The work is done on canvas in oil. The volume of the canvas is not small and is 156x282 cm.
The picture is characterized by optimism and dynamism, which is not usually peculiar to the author. In the center of the picture depicts the moment of triumph of a man on a black horse breaking through the defense of a snow fortress.
The victor’s face shows the confidence of the rider who broke away from the pursuit. The defenders of the fortress are left behind, waving branches after him, evidently the horseman was rather poked with twigs on his way to victory. And, of course, no spectacle can not do without the crowd of spectators. Surikov carefully draws not only people’s faces, but also objects of toiletry and closet. And all this takes place against a background of pure snow. It is the white background that creates the very contrast required to maximize the emphasis on the people in the picture.
Surikov’s canvases always feature a lot of characters, despite the fact that the author tries to depict each of the characters, to give each of them an individual character, or to emphasize a strong emotion. When you look at the picture it becomes clear that the author has done a very hard work on his work, because prescribed all the heroes.
To work on the painting "Taking of the Snow City", the author made 10 sketches of his friends and acquaintances, and then make these images on the main canvas.
The painting is an exhibit of the Russian Museum and is free for public access.

The painting was created in Krasnoyarsk, where the painter lived for almost a year and a half. Before that, in 1887, misfortune struck Surikov: his wife died. The loss of his beloved temporarily turned the artist away from painting. Only in Siberia, surrounded by the care of loved ones, he gradually began to recover. Nature, simple and healthy life revived his creative power.
The uniqueness of life in Siberia, the dazzling colors of its winter, the daring spirit of the Cossack youth – these vivid impressions, preserved in the artists soul since childhood, now came alive with new force and became the basis for a new work by the master.
In the painting The Snow Fortress, which appeared after three historical paintings, one can see the direct origins of the artists immense love of life, which helped him overcome grief and adversity. With this love of life, V. I. Surikov endowed his characters as well.
The idea for the painting was suggested to the artist by his younger brother, Alexander. He is depicted on the right side of the painting, standing in a sleigh. In the sleigh sits Ekaterina Alexandrovna Rachkovskaya, the wife of a famous Krasnoyarsk doctor, depicted in profile. The snow fortress was built in the courtyard of the Surikov estate. Peasants from the village of Bazaiha participated in the crowd scenes.
The plot of the painting is a familiar Siberian Cossack holiday game. On the last day of Maslenitsa (Butter Week), a snow fortress was erected, which was to be captured in a mock battle. Numerous participants and spectators gathered for the entertainment. Some tried to break through to the fortress, others defended it, while a third group watched with interest as daring young men competed.
The unrestrained fun and energy merged into a noisy, crowded scene depicted by Surikov. The movement building from the background reaches its climax in the fierce ascent of the lucky rider breaking through the icy gates. The open space in the foreground allows one to feel the swiftness of the breakthrough. The movement of the participants following the winner is emphasized by the diagonal arrangement of the main group and the silhouette of the hills rising on the left.
Despite the individual differences in the figures, the painting is based on portrait images. Surikov sought to find stable, long-established folk types in the faces depicted in the painting. The artist paid great attention to everyday attributes: festive clothing, old-fashioned utensils – everything created by the hands of the people and preserving the imprint of their tastes.
Against a background of sparkling snow, shimmering with bluish and slightly yellowish hues, the dressed-up crowd looks especially bright. The sonorous, rich color is based on contrasting combinations of white, red, blue, yellow, and green. The richness of shades and reflections, the overall soft silvery-blue tone, enhance the life-affirming quality of the painting. The main character is painted with great skill. The rider and horse fly directly at the viewer, a sleigh races in the opposite direction, and in this commotion and noise, a feeling of real celebration arises.
In The Snow Fortress, one can see the inner upsurge that Surikov experienced as a result of his trip to Siberia, which gave the artist, in his words, an extraordinary strength of spirit.

Vasily Ivanovich Surikov painted the painting The Capture of a Snow Fortress shortly after completing Boyarina Morozova, a time when the artist was experiencing great sorrow. His wife had passed away. Surikov deeply mourned her loss, suffering and unable to work. His family persuaded him to leave Moscow temporarily and spend some time in his hometown of Krasnoyarsk. Surikov never forgot Siberia and loved it passionately. The people in Siberia are different from those in Russia; they are free and brave, he said proudly. They say about us: The people of Krasnoyarsk have fiery hearts. Siberia comforted Surikovs passionate heart. Dark thoughts dissipated. The grief began to recede. He was drawn back to the brush, to the paints. And, as often happens, after long days of sorrow, he wanted to tell people something bright and joyful. I shook off my sadness and transitioned from drama to great joy, the artist confessed. He painted a cheerful, festive painting called The Capture of a Snow Fortress. I wanted to convey in the painting my impression of Siberian life, the colors of its winter, and the boldness of the Cossack youth, Surikov said.
For Maslenitsa (a Slavic folk holiday), skilled craftsmen built a fortress on the river made of ice and snow. They erected walls with battlements, placed snow cannons along the walls, and sculpted figures of Cossacks, both on foot and on horseback, on top. A snow table was set up in the fortress, laden with treats: snow pies, pastries, ice bottles, and mugs.
Defenders armed with switches, brooms, and rattles surrounded the fortress. Attackers on horses were positioned at a distance. At the signal, the attackers charged. The defenders lashed at the horses with their switches and brooms, scaring them with rattles. The horses turned away from the fortress, but the riders again spurred them into attack. The battle ended when one of the riders broke through the ranks of the defenders and, breaking down the wall, burst into the fortress. The victor was cheered, rolled in the snow, and then lavishly feasted.
When Surikov decided to paint the picture, the residents of Krasnoyarsk built a snow fortress for him and entertained the artist with a lively game. But no less important were Surikovs childhood memories. It was on that shore that I first saw how a fortress was captured, he said. There was a crowd. The snow fortress – and a black horse passed right by me, I remember; it must be that horse that remained in my painting.
Спосибки большое!!!!
напишите просто описание
а нам задали рассказ а не сочинение, блин!

спс за соч :D
ну где же клубничик@ которая всех спасла в счинении по картине Косцы?! О клубничик@ приди и спаси всеех!
At the beginning of 1888, the artist experienced a severe shock: his wife died. Surikov almost abandoned art, consumed by grief. A testament to the artists state at that time is the painting The Healing of the Blind Man, first exhibited in 1893 at a traveling exhibition.
Heeding the advice of his relatives, Surikov traveled to Siberia, to Krasnoyarsk, with his daughters. And then I transitioned from drama to great cheerfulness, the artist recalled. I always had such shifts towards cheerfulness. I painted a domestic scene called The Town is Being Taken at that time. I returned to childhood memories...
In the painting The Taking of the Snow Fort, which followed three historical paintings, one can see the direct origins of the artists immense love for life, which helped him overcome grief and adversity. V. I. Surikov endowed his characters with this love for life as well.
The idea for the painting was suggested to the artist by his younger brother, Alexander. He is depicted on the right side of the painting, standing in a sleigh. In the sleigh sits Ekaterina Alexandrovna Rachkovskaya, the wife of a well-known Krasnoyarsk doctor, shown in profile. The snow fort was built in the courtyard of the Surikov estate. Peasants from the village of Bazaiha participated in the crowd scenes.
The artist emphasized that he could not imagine historical figures without the people, without the crowd. Breaking this principle in the painting Menshikov in Berezov, he, on the contrary, depicts an anonymous, cheerful crowd in a traditional Cossack game in The Taking of the Snow Fort, recalling his Siberian childhood fun. The people, it seems (for the first time in Surikovs work), are presented as a single, indivisible whole, but their revelry is unrestrained, as destructive and formidable, despite the major brightness of the colors of a sunny winter day, a whirlwind.
The Taking of the Snow Fort received an honorary medal at the international exhibition in Paris in 1900.

Here is the translation of the text into English:
Here is an essay about this painting:
The painting was created in Krasnoyarsk, where the painter lived for almost a year and a half. Before that, in 1887, a misfortune befell Surikov: his wife died. The loss of his loved one temporarily turned the artist away from painting. Only in Siberia, surrounded by the care of his relatives, he gradually began to recover. The plot of the painting depicts a familiar old festive game of Siberian Cossacks that Surikov knew. Some tried to break through to the fortress, others defended it, while still others watched with interest as the daring young men competed.
Uncontrollable fun and energy merged into one in the noisy, crowded scene depicted by Surikov. The movement building from the depths finds its culmination in the furious surge of a lucky rider breaking through the icy gates. The open space in the foreground allows one to feel the swiftness of the breakthrough. The movement of the participants following the winner is emphasized by the diagonal arrangement of the main group and the silhouette of the hills rising on the left.
Despite the individual differences in the figures, the basis of the painting lies in portrait images. Surikov sought to find stable, long-standing folk types in the faces depicted in the painting. The artist paid great attention to everyday attributes: festive clothing, old utensils – everything that was created by the hands of the people and preserves the imprint of their tastes.

The sonorous, rich color is based on contrasting combinations of white, red, blue, yellow, and green. The richness of shades and reflections, the overall soft silvery-blue tone, enhance the joyfulness of the painting. The main character has been written with great skill. The rider and horse rush directly at the viewer, the sleigh speeds in the opposite direction, and in this commotion and noise, a feeling of real celebration arises.
In The Snow Town, one can see the internal uplift that Surikov experienced as a result of his trip to Siberia, which gave the artist, according to him, an extraordinary strength of spirit.
Here is another version:
Vasily Ivanovich Surikov painted the painting The Taking of the Snow Town shortly after finishing Boyarina Morozova, when the artist experienced great grief. His wife died. Surikov deeply mourned the loss; he was depressed and unable to work. His relatives persuaded him to leave Moscow for a while and live in his native Krasnoyarsk. It was a snow town – and a black horse ran right past me, I remember; its probably him who remained in my painting.
And here is the third version:
The painting The Taking of the Snow Town, painted after the monumental historical works, is the only domestic work in Surikovs oeuvre.

Before us is a painting by the famous Russian artist Vasily Ivanovich Surikov, The Capture of the Snow Fort. The basis of the plot is an old Cossack game, which is part of the Maslenitsa festival.
In the foreground of the painting is depicted the most tense and climactic moment: a brave young man on his horse jumps over the wall of the snow fort. Surikov depicts the rider in a swift surge, as his body leans forward. With his right hand, he knocks down the structure made of snow. With his left hand, the young man tries to hold his horse. In the jump, the horse kicked the snow barrier with its front hooves so forcefully that clumps of snow flew apart in all directions. The horses mane flies up, its teeth are bared, and its eyes are excited; you can say that they burn with fire. When you look at the painting, it creates the impression that the horse and rider have merged into one to achieve the desired result, to win no matter what. And most likely, this man is the winner of this game.
Maslenitsa in Russia was always celebrated lavishly. The work of Vasily Ivanovich Surikov is proof of that. When you look at the painting The Capture of the Snow Fort, you feel a festive atmosphere. All the people are dressed up. The author depicts women who are wearing embroidered half-coats and colorful scarves, and men in bekesh with fur collars. The sleighs are decorated with the finest carpets. Everyones faces are cheerful and rosy. The game is enjoyed by everyone; it is exciting and interesting. Everyone is watching to see who will be the winner. Some sympathize from the sidelines, while others are eager to join the fray, waving sticks, throwing snowballs, and cheering each other on with words.
The painting The Capture of the Snow Fort by Vasily Ivanovich Surikov leaves a feeling of joy and celebration in your soul.
