Painter: Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin
Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin was a great Russian artist who gained fame with paintings depicting native nature. Shishkin was particularly inspired by the forest. In the paintings of the artist it is different - coniferous and mixed, summer and winter - but always drawn with amazing accuracy, precision and love. "Children in the woods" is one of these paintings, characteristic of Shishkin’s work. It’s enough to cast a fleeting glance at the canvas to already identify the author by the manner of performance and subject.
Description of Ivan Shishkin’s painting "Children in the Woods".
Almost the entire space of the painting is occupied by the images of grass and trees. In the foreground we can see the lawn, slightly yellowed from the summer heat, with touching heads of dandelions.
On both sides of the picture are powerful tree trunks: on the left are the dark brown trunks of the pines, and on the right is the light bark of the Russian birch. The trees seem to frame the painting and give it compositional completeness. Their straight trunks stare upwards while their crowns get lost outside the canvas.
The background is also a continuous green wall of trees and bushes. Through the branches of the trees one can see a piece of the pale blue sky which is so typical for a summer day in the middle part of Russia. But such a sky does not leave the impression of overcast and cold. It is balanced by the sun’s reflections on the grass.
The perspective of the painting is wonderfully constructed. One can see how the forest edge that begins in the foreground extends into the distance and takes us to the trees in the background. In the center of the composition are two childlike figures, surprisingly small and defenseless in this green forest realm. The red clothing of one of the children stands out against the general background of the picture and involuntarily draws the eye. In comparison to him, the second child is almost inconspicuous.
Shishkin uses different shades of green in the painting. Here we see both saturated dark in the depiction of coniferous trees, and warm, almost yellow, in the drawing of the grass. The colors alternate with each other, creating a wonderful harmony and realism.

You cannot comment Why?
The picture has something of this: wood, tree, landscape, nature, outdoors, environment, leaf, park, scenic, daylight, grass, summer, conifer, dawn, fall, light, flora, evergreen, fair weather.
Perhaps it’s a painting of a forest scene with a person in the distance walking through the woods, with tall trees in the foreground and grass.
