This painting depicts a broad landscape at dusk, dominated by a vast sky filled with a multitude of birds in flight. The sky transitions from a soft, pale blue or greenish hue near the horizon, where the last rays of sunlight struggle to penetrate through a layer of heavy, reddish-brown clouds, to a deeper tone higher up. These clouds are textured and voluminous, creating a dramatic backdrop for the converging flock of birds.
The land below is rendered in dark, muted tones, suggesting the encroaching night. A rolling terrain dominates the foreground, with some suggestion of vegetation, perhaps scrubland or fields, fading into the gloom. In the middle distance, a hint of a settlement can be detected, with a church spire or tall building rising faintly against the twilight sky.
