Around the throne, several figures are gathered. On the left, a bearded man holding keys and a book, likely St. Peter, stands beside a cloaked figure in white, possibly a nun or another saint. On the right, a bearded man in dark robes is positioned next to a figure in red and black, who appears to be a bishop, indicated by his mitre and ceremonial cross. Two cherubic figures are at the bottom foreground, engaged in an intimate interaction, one examining a piece of paper held by the other.
The subtexts of the painting are rich with religious and symbolic meaning. The Madonna and Child are the divine center, embodying the core of Christian faith. The figures surrounding them represent important figures within the Church, signifying their role as witnesses and protectors of this divine lineage and message. The elevated position of Mary and Jesus emphasizes their celestial status. The baldachin and ornate architectural elements reinforce the solemnity and grandeur of the divine presence. The keys held by St. Peter are a clear allusion to his role as the rock of the Church and his authority. The presence of bishops and other holy figures highlights the institutional structure and lineage of the Church. The cherubs in the foreground, with their innocent and almost human interaction, can be seen as representing the purity and simple faith of humanity, perhaps hinting at the future interactions of Christ with mankind. The overall composition aims to evoke awe and reverence, solidifying the theological importance of Mary and her son within Christian doctrine.
