Three children are struggling to pull a heavy barrel of water. Its cold. The barrel is covered in ice, making it even heavier. A sharp wind blows into the childrens faces. Their thin clothes offer no protection from the harsh frost. Hard work doesnt warm them up. One cans help but think about how merciless the heart of the owner must be to send these freezing children to the river with such a heavy barrel. A passerby, just as impoverished as these children, tries to help them by putting his shoulder against the barrel and pushing their incredibly heavy load. The children resemble a worn-out team of horses. But when did they become so exhausted? They are so small. A protest rises involuntarily in ones soul against such a life, where such injustice exists.
Under the childrens feet lies a solitary twig, just as homeless as they are. It has broken off from its parent tree, just like they have been separated from their home. The scene is rendered in brown and gray tones. Its gloom is accentuated by the tall monastery wall along which the children are walking. One wants to help the children reach home, to find warmth. It is unbearable to see their sadness and hopelessness. The essence of classic art lies in its ability to touch the soul even a hundred years later, just as it did in that distant time. This painting is undoubtedly our artistic classic.

Essay on Perovs painting Trio. Apprentice craftsmen carry water.
Vasily Grigorievich Perov, Trio. This is the name by which the painting is known throughout the world. Vasily Grigorievich Perov himself called this painting Apprentice craftsmen carry water. This canvas, painted by the master in 1866, at the height of his life and creative path, rightfully considered one of the most striking and memorable works of this author. Today, this painting is located in the very heart of art, in the Tretyakov Gallery.
The painting depicts children, quite attractive, who, at first glance, evoke a feeling of sympathy. These children are performing work that is too difficult for their young age; they are carrying a huge bucket filled with water along a terrible, icy road. The faces of the children, depicted with particular care, evoke feelings of bewilderment and bitterness. Who could force such small, innocent creatures to perform such hard labor? But, unfortunately, in the second half of the 19th century, this was commonplace, and thousands of little poor workers performed work that even an adult would have difficulty doing.
Perov, born into a not-poor family but illegitimate, keenly felt such social injustice as child slavery. Many of his works feature children. He did not paint the heirs of wealthy families, but children to whom nothing was given in this life except work and beatings appear on his canvases throughout the artists career. Recognition of this painting by contemporaries brought Vasily Grigorievich the title of academician.
A Difficult Childhood in Harsh Times
Now, living in a world of computer technology and nuclear weapons, its hard to imagine times when even getting a drink of water required a lot of effort. In Perovs painting Troika. Apprentice boys are carrying water, we see ordinary children hauling water along the road. Despite the wind, cold, and frost, these poorly dressed children, who have put on all their clothes to warm themselves as much as possible, are pulling a cart with a barrel filled to the brim with water. A dog, a loyal friend of the children, runs next to the barrel of water, while in the background, a man helps push the cart. What could force young children, despite the frost, which is evident from the icicles that have formed on the barrel, to carry such a large amount of water? It was simply human need. In the 19th century, many responsibilities were placed on children; they performed tasks that adults couldnt always do. And although it may seem difficult for young children and adolescents to do various chores, they did so regardless of their mood or desire, because they knew it was their duty, and sooner or later they would have to fulfill their parents requests, who worked all day, and they needed help. Children became adults early; there wasnt much time for childish games, although they always remained kind and honest. Although not everyone lived like this; some waited for the poor to carry out their orders. Its not about how much wealth you have, but about what kind of person you are inside.
Childrens images in Perovs painting Troika (essay)
The painting Troika is a famous work by the great Russian artist Vasily Perov, which was created by the author back in 1866 and was intended to convey the harsh atmosphere of life for simple, poor peasants of that time.
This work depicts a team of children – according to the second name, they are apprentices pulling a cart with a barrel of water. Their tense poses show the excessive effort they are exerting, while their tattered clothes blowing in the wind suggest a frosty wind. All these details, along with the help provided by a man behind the cart, indicate the extreme weight of the load for the childrens fragile bodies and the harshness of their labor. The snow-covered road and the frozen water on the surface of the barrel emphasize the intense cold and describe the terrible conditions in which they work.
Perov conveyed all the catastrophic hardship faced by peasant children of that time through the use of dark, dull, gray tones. The gloom of the painting, combined with the deserted street, creates a sense of tragedy and hopelessness, not only in nature but also in the lives of the young heroes of this immortal work.
Trio (Apprentice boys carrying water) is one of the most famous and expressive paintings by the Russian artist Vasily Perov. It depicts lightly dressed children struggling to pull a huge, seemingly impossible-to-move tub of water behind them. The scene takes place in winter. The painters work is very emotional, and its meaning is clear to everyone. To convey all the tragedy of the situation, the author uses dark gray colors. The desolate street and the bare wall on the right further enhance the atmosphere. The faces of the poor children are distorted with suffering, their hair disheveled by the strong wind blowing directly in their faces. The already heavy barrel of water is covered in ice due to the severe frost. One can only imagine how cold these unfortunate children must be, resembling a trio of exhausted horses. This is what the artist conveys in the title of his painting. Behind the cart, we see a passerby dressed, like the children, in rags. He is the only one who shows sympathy for them and tries with all his might to help.
The artists work touches on the theme of exploitation of child labor in serf Russia. Very often such children were brought from villages to cities to work. With his painting, the author wanted to tell about the criminal cruelty and heartlessness of those people who are capable of such abuse against small children.

You cannot comment Why?
The subtexts of the painting are multifaceted and speak to themes of hardship, labor, and the vulnerability of youth. The apprentices are depicted as engaged in arduous physical labor, likely to earn a meager living, underscoring the social realities of the time. The unforgiving weather and the stooped postures of the figures emphasize their struggle for survival. The painting could be interpreted as a commentary on the difficulties faced by the working class, particularly children, and their resilience in the face of adversity. The starkness of the environment and the somber mood evoke a sense of struggle and perhaps a yearning for a warmer, more prosperous future. It is a poignant portrayal of youthful endurance and the harshness of life.
