Before us is an absolutely allegorical creation by the painter. To decipher this unusual allegory, one must pay attention to the inscription in Latin. It can be seen at the upper part of the canvas. Its meaning is as follows: the present must necessarily be based on the past. Only in this case it will not damage the future. Titian painted not only himself, but also his son and nephew. Their portraits represent one whole with the heads of three animals: a regal lion, a faithful dog and a lonely wolf.
Description of Titian Vechellio’s painting Allegory of Time (Prudence)
Before us is an absolutely allegorical creation by the painter. To decipher this unusual allegory, one must pay attention to the inscription in Latin. It can be seen at the upper part of the canvas. Its meaning is as follows: the present must necessarily be based on the past. Only in this case it will not damage the future.
Titian painted not only himself, but also his son and nephew. Their portraits represent one whole with the heads of three animals: a regal lion, a faithful dog and a lonely wolf. In symbolism, this beast with three heads just denoted Prudence. It contained three significant things: memory, knowledge, and experience.
In antiquity, symbols were needed to denote important concepts as precisely as possible. The man of mature years is rightly likened by the painter to a lion. He has the power over everything. He is the true ruler of this world. A young man is as trusting as a young dog on duty. Old age, on the other hand, is wise, knows life very well, but is physically weak and lonely. It is akin to the wolf.
During the Renaissance, the works of Macrobius, the philosopher of ancient Rome, become very popular. He describes the statue of Serapis. This sun god is a real monster with three heads: a lion, a wolf, and a dog. It is a kind of Cerberus. But Macrobius interprets this image differently. He says that these are three important aspects of a temporal character. During the Renaissance, this image is combined with the personification of Prudence, which was also three-headed. The result was the formation of one whole.
The artist’s allegory strikes with a complex pictoriality. All boundaries are absolutely blurred, the themes of religion and mythology are interpreted very subtly at the level of psychology. It seems that this canvas is woven from the brush strokes, which in some places are rubbed simply with the fingers. The tones are complementary and interpenetrating. The result is a unity. This is where the colors and shapes come from.
