"The Lady with the Ermine" is a kind of real breakthrough in the art of the psychological portrait of the time. This picture was painted in oil on wood, which was a novelty for Italian artists at the time. It must be said that Leonardo Da Vinci belonged to those who actively used all sorts of innovations in his work.
Another important distinguishing feature of the painting is the position of the girl with the animal: her figure is depicted in three-quarters, and her eyes are directed sideways, that is, they do not look at the viewer. This peculiar discovery also belongs to Da Vinci.
Interesting is the fact that the girl is not holding an ermine, but an albino ferret. So why is the painting called "Lady with an ermine"? More likely because in Greek ermine sounds like "Galle", which is very consonant with the name of Halleroni. Such a small nuance does not play a significant role, as in those days people did not attach much importance to the species of animals: if a rodent with a long tail, it means an ermine. It must be said that a fragile girl, who has a wild animal in her arms, which in addition is poorly tamed, looks quite effective and beautiful.
You should also pay attention to the girl’s facial features, they are as if chiseled out of white marble. The transparent cap and thin necklace around her neck only emphasize all the tenderness and sophistication of this beautiful lady, and the light thin fingers barely touch the little animal, which sits obediently in the arms of his mistress. All in all, the entire painting is imbued with sublime feelings, which are captured in the girl’s gaze and pose.
At present Da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine is in the Czartoryzskie Gallery in Poland.

The famous and enigmatic painting by Leonardo da Vinci, Lady with an Ermine, was painted in the artists beloved country, Italy, around 1490. It is the only painting by Leonardo that is located in Poland.
The portrait depicts Cecilia Gallerani, who was allegedly the mistress of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. Although for some time it was thought to be a portrait of an unknown woman, but comparing the painting with drawings of another portrait, also painted by Leonardo, and a description of Ludovico Sforzas favorite, they decided that the same woman was depicted on the canvas.
Another confirmation that it was indeed Cecilia is that in 1488, Ludovico Sforza was awarded the Order of the Ermine, hence his nickname The White Ermine.
The young and beautiful Cecilia, depicted by the artist, was wearing a Spanish costume. In her hands she holds and very carefully presses to herself a small animal that resembles a ferret. The womans forehead is adorned with a thin, elegant headband, and on her head is a sheer cap, from which a few strands of beautiful and smooth hair peek out. Around her neck is a black, but light necklace, which seems to indicate the tenderness of the woman, while also highlighting her masculinity in how she holds the ermine. Looking at the painting, one feels that the woman wants to take the ermine to herself, to take it as a trophy. In fact, the animal depicted is not an ermine, but an albino ferret, although during the time the painting was created, the type of animal did not play a major role.
A reconstruction of the portrait revealed that initially, the woman was painted against a blue background, which, in my opinion, added more depth and mystery to the portrait. The analysis even revealed the womans eyelashes, which had fallen off as a result of the paintings aging. The analysis also managed to reveal the original sketches made by the artist, which greatly helped in studying Leonardo da Vincis work.
You will agree that the painting is very enigmatic. Just look at the gaze of this sweet and beautiful woman and her barely noticeable smile, and immediately a thousand questions arise about this wonderful woman painted by Leonardo da Vinci...
There is another mysterious circumstance that raises many questions. French scientist Pascal Cotte discovered two more layers of paint on the painting. He proved that Leonardo initially depicted only Cecilias portrait. The brush in Cecilias right hand was resting on her left wrist, and there was no animal in her hands. Later, the artist added the image of an ermine to the portrait.
And by the way, there is still no one hundred percent documentary evidence that Leonardo da Vinci depicted exactly Cecilia Gallerani on the canvas.
Even for one painting, it is worth going to Poland to see this painting with your own eyes and try to unravel this beautiful unknown woman from the canvas...
