The background is divided into two distinct areas: the left side is a light, almost white canvas texture, which illuminates the womans face and the left side of her robe. In contrast, the right side is a deep, dark, and featureless expanse, which creates a dramatic contrast and draws attention to the subject.
The paintings subtext can be interpreted in several ways. The contrast between the illuminated subject and the dark background might symbolize the woman as a beacon of light or life in a somber world, or perhaps her inner world is illuminated while the external world remains in shadow. Her direct gaze and faint smile could suggest confidence, or a hidden knowledge, inviting the viewer to ponder her thoughts and emotions. The delicate rendering of her features and the flowing fabric of her robe can evoke a sense of elegance and refinement, while the impressionistic style leaves room for the viewers imagination to fill in the details and project their own feelings onto the subject. The title Lady in White contrasts with the predominantly blue attire, but could refer to the luminous quality of her skin illuminated by the light, or perhaps a more symbolic purity or ethereal nature.
