Description of Eduard Manet’s painting "Reading
In 1868, Manet painted a painting called "Reading." The model, for this work, was the Frenchwoman Victoria Meran, who was more than once spotted on the artist’s famous canvases. Manet, a true French painter, more than once painted Parisian streets, river scenes, sensual portraits and still lifes. His painting "Reading" is distinguished by its special, peculiar only to the Impressionists, manner of writing. Thus, Edouard Manet was able to make the surrounding reality a subject of art.
It remains a mystery that although Manet is partly the founder of Impressionism, the author was never able to merge with the movement. He refused to participate in Impressionist exhibitions other than art salons, explaining this by his aristocratic prejudices and quirks.
What is remarkable about the painting Reading is that although the author was distinguished by a great inner stability of images, he still used the techniques of Impressionism in his arsenal - broad strokes, impulsive, dynamic image, as if plucked from the general flow of time.
Critics have repeatedly remarked that the seventies were the crown of the author’s creativity. At that time, Manet was strongly influenced by the works of Renoir and Monet, that’s when he created his unsurpassed female portraits, to which belongs the painting "Reading". At first glance, the canvas seems to be a completely unremarkable example of the painter’s skill.
But after looking closely, you can see the freshness of the morning, the glare of the sun playing on the girl’s dress. She froze in amazement, apparently, the artist unexpectedly caught her with her lover reading a novel. The beauty is surrounded by a delicate glow of lace.
The Reading painting is a true vision of color and light. In this portrait, Manet has managed to convey the fairy-like character of the characters through his amazing style of writing.
