Museums are open from 10:00 to 17:00, with no lunch break provided. Most museums are open on national holidays. The exception is New Year holidays, which last from December 28 to January 3. This applies to government institutions; private collections welcome guests during this period as well.
Tickets to many Japanese museums can be ordered online in advance. There's an opportunity to join a tour, but it will be conducted in English. Some museums offer audio guides also in English.
