It was painting that became for Gubanov one of the sources of low earnings, in contrast to the rejected and unpublished verses. For some time he was in the state of the art factory, but left there because of the conveyor and not too creative nature of the work.

The creation of the SMOG poetry association, which included Gubanov’s friends and associates (Yuri Kublanovsky, Vladimir Aleinikov, Vladimir Batshev), caused an extremely negative reaction from the authorities. The independent judgments of young writers, the release of self-published collections, which received a positive response in the West, and a rally in support of publicity held on Pushkinskaya Square in December 1965, caused the poet to be persecuted. This is open surveillance, and forced hospitalization at the Institute of Psychiatry, and tortured testimonies against human rights activist Alexander Ginzburg, and intimidation of relatives and friends. The dispersal of SMOG, the inability to freely do what you love, the persecution caused the most severe depression of the poet and the reason for his early death.
